2021 rolling on in means that it’s time to run through the December challenge entries from December!

The December challenge was a bit unusual because it was to submit one RAW file for judging. The image would be judged on focus, composition, exposure and, to a certain extent, white balance. The entries were amazing to look at because submitting RAW files is really quite scary and you all smashed it.

The video covering the entires, critique, prizes AND the January challenge (in brief) can be found here:

As usual it takes more than one shortlist to whittle down and in this case, the first shortlist ended here. Congratulations to all who made the first list!

The Short Shortlist consisted of these 18 stunning RAW files, covering a wide variety of styles from low key studio to wide-angle environmental. Every single one of these images met the bronze criteria but there can only be 3 on top:

Therefore, the top 3 were:

  • Gold Pin: Rebekah Dube
  • Silver Pin: Kim Dubois
  • Bronze Pin: Robin McConnell

(If you don’t know what Pins are, please check out the section on pins here.)

Their images are here:

Of course, the Gold Pin winner for this month also receives a £50 Amazon Gift Card which we’ll organise in the next few days for Rebekah!

But what is January’s challenge? Well, this months challenge is:

The Emotion Challenge.

The aim of this months challenge is to create an image that portrays an emotion. I want to be hit in the feels and really dive into the emotions being evoked. It could be humour, excitement, sadness, grief, hope or any other emotion you can think of. The subject does not have to be a dog – I repeat, the subject can be anything at all.

The image will be judged on all the normal things (composition, focus, exposure, editing quality (not quantity!) and white balance). As always, no purchased assets are allowed – these include overlays, composite elements and brushes.

This challenge has the power to really, really push you. It won’t be easy but man, it’ll be worth it!

How to enter:

  • Stricly ONE entry per person.
  • Shoot or select an image shot within the last 12 months.
  • Post your piece to Instagram and tag @thattogspot in the image.
  • In the description/caption, use the hashtag #ThatTogSpotChallenge
  • (optional) Share the post to your story (bonus points for adding a before and after) and tag @thattogspot and #ThatTogSpotChallenge in the story
  • Entries close at midnight (UK time) on the last day of January

Judging:

Images will be judged on the usual criteria when it comes to editing and shooting. Marks will be gained for good exposure, good lighting, good focus, colour, editing and composition. The judging will take place at the start of February and the judges decision is final.

Good luck!
