Possibilities!
Participation Requirements
This workshop is aimed at individuals with a certain skill level and experience using specific tools. This is not to stop others being able to learn, it is to ensure that everyone in the group has the same one-to-one attention.
I’m sure you will know what it is like being on a workshop with individuals at opposite ends of the skill spectrum and so it’s so important that you are honest with yourself before booking onto this course.
To be a good fit for the advanced workshop, you will need to:
- Fully understand manual mode and how to change the settings
- Understand different focus modes on your camera
- Confidently bring images into Lightroom, and pick/cull
- Know how to do the following confidently in Photoshop:
- Use the clone stamp tool
- Re-order layers
- Do a basic mask (brush only)
If you meet all of the above criteria, continue onwards!
The Workshop
Itinerary
Day 1 - Indoor Venue
Morning
This section of the workshop is vital. We cover theory required to complete the rest of the workshop and ensure cameras are fully prepared (and you) for the next stage of the workshop.
This part of the workshop is held indoors and is desk-based. Expect to have a crash-course in my techniques and thought processes, as well as in-depth Q&A to ensure everyone is ready to move on to…
Day 1 - Shoot Location
Afternoon
Shoot time! We’ll head out – regardless of the weather, so come prepared for every eventuality – towards the location. This involves a short drive to a rendezvous point. Once all there, we begin the walk towards the shoot location.
The walk lasts for approximately 10 minutes and involves a slight incline.
The practical portion of the day commences first using Alfie and then introducing other models who are less “secure”. At this point, students peel off into smaller groups with a model each to get the most hands-on shooting time possible.
Day 1 - Indoor Venue
Evening
Anyone who wants to can join us for dinner in the venue’s main restaurant. It won’t be a late one because, if I’m honest, I’m not a night owl but it will be nice to finish the day off with a bit of a social!
Day 2 - Indoor Venue
Morning
Back at the indoor location, an editing masterclass commences. Be prepared to take notes!
Day 2 - Indoor Venue
Afternoon
This is your time. Every student will have one to one time as they work through their favourite “shot”. I do not believe in providing every single answer, so you will be tested – this is purely to assist active recall in the future – so that you remember what to do and when as part of the workflow.
We’ll wrap up with you mentally worn out but hopefully excited to go and recreate the whole process on your own!
Post Workshop
Additional Resources
After the workshop, you will have access to discounted one-to-one online sessions, along with some other goodies!
Essential reading
COVID-19
This workshop is planned using locations that, in theory, should not be closed in the unlikely event that a local lockdown is enforced. Thankfully, we’re in a low COVID area here. However, we do need to take precautions and we will be following COVID Secure guidance.
Therefore, the following will be in operation:
- All students must wear a mask when moving to or from a location*
- At a location, all students must remain at least 1m apart
- No student can handle another students equipment
- No student can directly handle a model
- In the unlikely event that we have to cancel due to COVID-19, a full refund will be given, less any transaction fees
Anyone not complying with the above guidelines will be reminded in the first instance. If a blatant disregard for others safety is seen, the student will be asked to leave the venue and the workshop with no refund. Safety first!
*This may change to at all times but at a minimum, masks will be required by all participants.

What others say about this workshop:
I joined this workshop to learn more about photo’ editing, but I learned so much more than this. I learned that the editing is like the candle on your birthday cake. It finishes it off well, but it’s really not that important. Jess is a very talented teacher with so much knowledge & a great way of delivering that knowledge. If anyone is in two minds about whether this workshop is worth the money, then my answer would be yes. Every single penny & then some.
The workshop was very well organised and it was very obvious how much time and effort had been put in to make sure everything ran smoothly. Jess was super helpful and made sure that everyone got as much out of the weekend as possible. I particularly liked book as it will be great to use as a reference point going forward.
I had a great couple of days, learning so much from Jess both in terms of looking at potential locations as well as a full editing workflow. As part of the workshop we were given a very professionally put together book covering all topics of the workshop, this was a very welcome surprise. All in all the workshop was extremely good value for money and I will be attending more of Jess’s workshops in the future.
If anyone is thinking about a workshop with Jess – do it! Jess gave us lots of technical information but explained it in a simple and easy to understand way. The shoot in the afternoon was a learning experience in itself, learning what to look for and how to look for shoot locations. Jess gave support and feedback throughout the shoot, helping us develop and learn. The editing day was very informative, with Jess always on hand to give advice, explain techniques and help us learn what to look for in our images. It was an excellent weekend, thank you Jess!
All I can say if you do not attend this you are missing out!
Not only is Jess an incredibly talented photographer, she’s also a phenomenal teacher! The workshop was challenging but Jess and her team walk you through every step of the way – the amount I’ve learnt from it is incredible! I was nervous about attending an advanced workshop because I don’t think of myself as ‘advanced’ but it was one of the best decisions I made. Such a fantastic experience and I can’t wait to put everything I’ve been taught into practice! Thank you 😀
What a wonderful weekend! Jess covered everything from the very beginning making us think about things differently. The shoot afternoon was a big learning curve, as was the editing day. Be prepared to learn lots, and be absolutely shattered but raring to go after the 2 days.
